The ubiquitous Ficus benjamina or weeping fig is widely used as an indoor plant because of its graceful weeping branches and easy care. Many new varieties have been introduced that show variations in leaf color, growth habit and leaf size. Ficus "braids" are highly prized as an architectural accent. Weeping Fig is tolerant of most indoor conditions but prefers bright indirect light and soil that remains evenly moist. Do not overwater or allow plant to sit in standing water for too long. Sudden changes to its environment such as allowing the plant to go too dry, moving the plant, or extreme variations in temperature will cause it to drop some of its foliage. Usually the plant will regenerate those leaves when conditions are favorable. Set the plant outside occasionally and flush the root ball to remove excess salt build-up, washing down the foliage to keep spider mites away. Sticky leaves can be a sign of a scale infestation and the plant should be quickly treated. Feed regularly while the plant is actively growing. If you need to prune the branches be careful of the white sap which can be a skin irritant and can damage furniture and rugs.
